CelloFest 2002 at California State University, Fresno offers professional and amateur cellists of all ages and abilities
the opportunity to experience an intense day-long workshop with guest artists Jürgen Wolf and Valerie Walden, and faculty
member Dieter Wulfhorst from California State University, Fresno. The day will culminate in a public concert featuring the
CelloFest 2002 Participants Ensemble in the CSUF Concert Hall at 6 p.m.

Jürgen Wolf studied with the legendary Pablo Casals and has performed worldwide as a soloist. He has recorded more than
one hundred commercial records and CDs. Jürgen Wolf is in the process of publishing an edition of Bachs cello suites based
on Pablo Casals teaching method. He recently retired from the position of principal cellist of the Düsseldorf Opera, a position
he held for almost thirty years. He is a founding member of the Philharmonic Cellists of Cologne, a much recorded ensemble,
and regularly appeared as soloist and principal cellist with the Bach Academy in Stuttgart under Helmuth Rilling. In 1964,
Jürgen Wolf won the coveted Chamber Music Prize at the International Competition of the Association of German Broadcasting
Stations (ARD) in Munich.
Internationally recognized as a cello historian, Valerie Walden is the author of One Hundred Years of Violoncello: a
History of Technique and Performance Practice from 1740 to 1840, published by Cambridge University Press, and a contributing
author to the Cambridge Companion to the Cello, the revised New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians and the Reader's Guide
to Music. Currently a faculty member of Chapman University's South San Joaquin adjunct campus and the College of the Sequoias,
she is also the principal cellist for the Tulare County Symphony and active as a cello teacher and adjudicator. Dr. Walden
studied cello with William Van den Burg, himself a Casals student, and Gabor Rejto, Laszlo Varga and Coral Bognuda. She holds
a Ph.D. from the University of Auckland, New Zealand.
Dieter Wulfhorst has extensively recorded and performed in Europe, Asia, Australia, and the United States and played in
the professional orchestras of Hannover, Göttingen, and Hildesheim before coming to the United States. He has studied with
the Guarneri Quartet and Evelyn Elsing. For the last eleven years Dr. Wulfhorst has held faculty positions in Colorado, Pennsylvania,
and Mississippi before joining the faculty of California State University, Fresno in 2001.
