Santa Fe String Ensemble Workshop

Santa Fe String Ensemble Workshop

June 27-July 1, 2005
(Monday-Friday)

Acequia Madre School, Santa Fe

Faculty:
Susan Doering and Dieter Wulfhorst

The Santa Fe String Ensemble Workshop offers serious string players (ages 10-18) the opportunity to experience an intense workshop with outstanding faculty members from California State University, Fresno and Fresno Pacific University. The workshop will culminate in a free public concert at Saint Francis Auditorium.

Faculty: Dr. Susan Doering: string orchestra, chamber music, violin, viola
Dr. Dieter Wulfhorst: chamber music, violoncello, doublebass

Susan Doering has performed throughout the United States, Europe, and the Far East as a soloist, recitalist, orchestral, and chamber musician. She has recorded five CD’s on various labels. She holds degrees from the University of Southern California, University of Michigan, and University of Maryland. Her teachers include Alice Schoenfeld, Camilla Wicks, and the Guarneri Quartet. A former tenured professor at Southwest Missouri State University, Dr. Doering also plays Baroque violin and is a Board-Certified music therapist. She currently teaches at Fresno Pacific University.

Dieter Wulfhorst has extensively recorded and performed in Europe, Asia, Australia, and the United States and played in the professional orchestras of Hannover, Göttingen, and Hildesheim before coming to the United States. He has studied with the Guarneri Quartet and Evelyn Elsing. For the last eleven years Dr. Wulfhorst has held faculty positions in Colorado, Pennsylvania, and Mississippi before joining the faculty at California State University, Fresno in 2001.

Both artists have performed regularly with Santa Fe Pro Musica and other local ensembles for the last thirteen years.

The workshop is open to orchestral string players (violin, viola, violoncello, doublebass) ages 10-18. Students must have mastered the end of Suzuki Book II or an equivalent (e.g., “All for Strings”). The ability to read music is mandatory. Shifting and vibrato are an advantage.

The musicians will play daily in the string orchestra, exploring standard repertoire from various style and historical periods. In addition, pre-formed and newly formed ensembles (matched by ability) will be coached daily in chamber music lessons. Both ensemble experiences will culminate in a public performance at Saint Francis Auditorium.
